The budget hotel sector will expand to 225,000 rooms by 2030, representing 26% of the British market. Between them, Travelodge and Premier Inn will squeeze independents as they grow from a current 16% market share.
Research by Melvin Gold for Travelodge paints the chain as the Tesco of hotels. And it predicts consumers who have traded down during the recession are unlikely to move back upmarket.
