InterContinental broke through the 600,000 rooms barrier last year to cement its position as the world's biggest hotelier in room number terms.
Wyndham, which has the second largest number of rooms, has by far the most properties under its flags, breaking through the 7,000 mark.
The rankings, published in the past week by Hotels magazine (http://www.hotelsmag.com/), show no movement in the global top 10 for the third year in a row. But just below, two Chinese companies, Jin Jiang and Home Inns, moved up, as did Rezidor.
The two biggest hotel franchisers – Wyndham and Choice – rank highly in terms of room numbers but their focus on economy lodging and the franchise business model means they have a significantly smaller overall economic value and so still sit outside what are regarded as the big five – IHG, Marriott, Hilton, Accor and Starwood.
