• Europe rates rise

Hotel rates in Europe rose from £95 in September to £103 in October, according to price comparison website Trivago.

The group said that change amounted to only 4% for continental Europeans, but a weak exchange rate has exacerbated the problem for British travellers, with European hotel rates 8% higher for British travellers heading to Europe. Rates rose in 32 of the 50 cities in the index, with Paris, Vienna and Istanbul at their highest point since January 2010.
