• Hearn calls for VAT cut

Grant Hearn, Travelodge executive chairman, has called for VAT on hotels to be cut in line with other European countries, including France, where it has dropped from 19.6% to 5.5%.

Writing in The Times, Hearn also called for a "development of tourism act", which would include simplifying visa applications for overseas visitors. Hearn said: "I do understand that now is not the best time to suggest tax cuts. But the time will come when we should look at reducing VAT to allow this industry to flourish and to create more jobs."
