International tourist arrivals grew by 7% to reach 421 million, led by growth in Asia, according to the August United Nations World Tourism Organisation World Tourism Barometer.
Europe, which was up by 2%, showed the slowest recovery, in part due to disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud in April. "Although we are witnessing a clear recovery in international tourism, we must remain cautious," said UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai in Madrid. "In many advanced economies, namely in the USA and in some major European markets, economic recovery has still to consolidate."
