The Moscow Times has reported that every hotel, beach and ski resort in Russia will have to obtain a mandatory classification in time for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to be held in Sochi.
Russian hotels previously enjoyed a voluntary star-category classification. There are 471 officially certified hotels in Russia just 10% of the country’s 4,500 hotels. Only 31 have star certification, according to data from the Federal Tourism Agency. The classification will be a paid procedure but it is expected to cost less than the current voluntary classification.
