• US openings at cyclical low

US hotel openings will be at cyclical lows this year and into 2012, according to the latest Lodging Econometrics survey.

A lack of development funding has been blamed, with banks unlikely to finance new construction until their distressed loans are cleared from their portfolios. The study forecast  that 446 hotels would come online this year, a gross growth rate of 0.9%, representing a fall-off of over two-thirds from the cyclical highs in 2008 and 2009.
