• UK hotel spend falls

British households spent less in 2013 on restaurants and hotels than in 2001/2, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

Overall expenditure on restaurants and hotels fell to GBP40.40 a week, compared with GBP48.50 in 2001/2 (adjusted to 2013 prices). Holidays remained important, with the average household spending GBP1,092 a year on package holidays, with the numbers taking an ocean cruise up again last year, rising by 1.5%.
