ME for Barcelona
Melia has announced it will develop a new ME by Melia hotel in Barcelona. The 173 room property will be built on the site of the former Hotel Barcelona in the city centre and is due to open in 2017.
Three major hotel operators are planning to launch new lifestyle or boutique brands this year. Moves by Hyatt, Loews and Langham mean activity in the niche is set to surpass that of a busy 2014, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Sheraton for Berlin
Starwood has signed to convert the Grand Hotel Esplanade in Berlin to its Sheraton format. A franchise agreement with Esplanade Operation, Host Hotels’ European joint venture, will see the 394 room property undergo a soft conversion over coming months.
Lone Star buys Jurys Inn
Lone Star Funds has paid GBP620m for the Jurys Inn hotel chain, and will retain the existing management team. The deal gives the US investor 31 hotels across the UK, Ireland and in Prague, with more than 7,000 rooms.
Hospital link in Bangkok
IHG has signed to develop a Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Bangkok. The project will sit alongside the city’s general hospital, aiming to exploit a growing market in medical tourism.
