Europe’s top 10 breach the million mark

The top 10 hotel chains in Europe now account for more than one million rooms, according to the latest report from Hotel Analyst, The European Hotel Industry Report 2022.

Accor is by far the biggest player with more than one-third of the total of hotels and just under 30% of the total of the top 10’s room count at 346,393. Jin Jiang, the Chinese owner of Louvre and Radisson, comes in at number two in Europe with fractionally over 200,000 rooms, just under 17% of the total of the top 10.

The only other groups with a double-digit share of the top 10 rooms are Marriott, at 127,499 rooms, just ahead of IHG’s 125,004 rooms. The top four companies have more than two-thirds of the total number of rooms in the top 10.

The report estimates total chain penetration at around 38% of the market, varying from 58% chain in Spain to only 17% in Italy. The top 10 account for just over half of the total of chain hotels in Europe and a bit under a fifth of the total hotel market.

The report is written by Macy Marvel, a Hotel Analyst Associate and a former professor at the Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne.
